A wide Navajo cuff bracelet set with one Blue Bird turquoise stone, handmade in sterling silver by Raymond Boyd.

The piece. A large teardrop of bright blue turquoise sits at the center in a smooth bezel, wrapped by a twisted rope border, with fanned stamped scallops and silver dot accents around the setting. Hand-stamped bands of crescents and diamond designs run along both sides, and the top and bottom edges are scalloped and stamped.

The stone. Blue Bird turquoise, 1 stone, bezel set, about 1 inch by 3/4 inch, in vivid sky blue with a touch of dark matrix. Natural turquoise varies, so every stone is a little different.

The artist. Raymond Boyd is a Navajo silversmith. The bracelet carries the artist's hallmark, "RB".

Navajo tradition. Navajo (Diné) silversmithing is a living art form more than 150 years old. Navajo smiths learned metalwork from Mexican plateros in the mid-1800s, and by the 1880s they were setting turquoise in hand-worked silver. Hand-stamped work like this is one of the tradition's signature techniques.
