Bobby Johnson 5-Stone Fox Turquoise Cuff Bracelet, Navajo Sterling Silver

A Navajo cuff bracelet set with five Fox turquoise stones, handmade in sterling silver by Bobby Johnson.

The piece. Five stones run across the top of the cuff: a large round center stone, a triangle on each side of it and an oval at each end. Each stone sits in its own bezel, with silver dot accents between them, on a cuff made of three parallel silver bands.

The stone. Fox turquoise, 5 stones, in soft blue-green with brown and tan matrix. Natural turquoise varies, so every stone is a little different.

The artist. Bobby Johnson is a Navajo silversmith. The bracelet carries the artist's hallmark, "B Johnson", and "Sterling".

Navajo tradition. Navajo (Diné) silversmithing is a living art form more than 150 years old. Navajo smiths learned metalwork from Mexican plateros in the mid-1800s, and by the 1880s they were setting turquoise in hand-worked silver. The turquoise cuff is one of the tradition's best-known forms.
